What’s the best way to visit and experience Los Angeles?

Feb 25, 2011 by Lisa Newton

I recently read an article by Nomadic Matt, a world traveler who writes about his adventures and gives travel advice to his readers.

He hates LA–which is a strong word–due to issues including our urban sprawl, ever constant traffic, and lack of a good public transit system.

Here’s an idea for you Matt:

Los Angeles is not a city that can be seen–or understood–in a single weekend or even a week. We’re a growing metropolis with many things changing and in flux.

There’s much to see and do here, and Los Angeles has always been a place of many contradictions–both good and bad. The best way to visit Los Angeles is to pick 10 things you want to see in one neighborhood. In doing so, your pre-conceived notions of L.A. will probably not be the same. Then again, your opinion of Los Angeles may spring from past notions which are no longer relevant.

But which 10 things do you choose from?

That’s the difficult part.

Do you want to go to the beach?

Then Venice, Santa Monica, and Cabrillo Beach are only the tip of the iceberg.

How about just visiting Downtown LA?

Even a weekend in Downtown isn’t enough to see and learn about all of its history, culture, and architecture. And that’s just for starters as downtown Los Angeles is quickly becoming an important part of our cultural infrastructure with its new housing, art, business, restaurant and museum clusters which are now facts on the ground here.

Are you interested in Hollywood or the Sunset Strip?

And what about shopping?

Again, the opportunities are endless–from Melrose Avenue to the Third Street Promenade to The Grove, to name just a few of our shopping and attractive locations.

Did I mention our growing culinary excellence and all or our new world class restaurants?

Within each of these neighborhoods, you’ll find high end hotels or inexpensive hostels, pricey restaurants and cheap eats. If you need it, public transit is also available within walking distance in all these neighborhoods.

But, you may not need it as most of these neighborhoods already have a very high walkscore.

So, it’s up to you. What do you want to see and do?

When visiting LA, it’s all about planning. Choose what you want to see, and as they say, the city is your open oyster.

However, you won’t be able to see and experience it all unless you live here, and from my point of view, Los Angeles is the best place to live in America.

True that! LA isn’t a place to experience all in a day. It’s really quite impossible. It’s also the kind of place for people willing to look beneath the surface of its stereotypical glam :)

@Carren, I agree, LA is unique, but in a good way.
