The Affaire in the Gardens Art Show in Beverly Hills

May 09, 2010 by Lisa Newton

Since 1973, the Affaire in the Gardens Art Show is one of the most popular art events on the West Coast.

This year’s Spring event (yes, there will be another one in the Fall), will be held on May 15th and 16th, from 10am-6pm.

The Affaire in the Gardens Art Show literally brings art to four city blocks in the City of Beverly Hills between Rodeo Drive and Rexford Drive in the Beverly Gardens Park. There will be over 250 fine artists gathered in one place, exhibiting their latest projects.

From ceramics to printmaking, to drawings to paintings, every form of art and artist will be represented.

Held at the back drop of the scenic Beverly Gardens Park–its rose bushes, public art, and serene walkways; the Affaire will feature outdoor dining, Latin music, a wine garden, live jazz, art demonstrations, and craft making for kids.

The Affaire in the Gardens Art Show is a proven family friendly festival, and an important cultural and artistic opportunity for art and design aficionados and collectors.

If you want to attend the Affaire in the Garden Art Show and support the arts community–but have children, that’s already been taken into account by the sponsors of the event, as well as the staff at the city of Beverly Hills, who are making sure that everyone’s needs are taken care of.

Indeed, here’s a list of all the kid friendly events at the Affaire:

  • Sandbirds (with Dorothy Halladay)
  • Fun with Drawing (with Ricardo Aguilar)
  • African Bead Wraps (with Anita Astrup)Henna Body Painting (with Bakari Santos)
  • Castle Blocks: Art You Can Play With (with Peter Dziulak)
  • Face Painting (with Party Faces)
  • Photo Frames (with Community Services)
  • Pastel & Painting Inspired by Kandinsky (with SmART Space) (Saturday only)
  • Paint My Scion (with Anita Astrup)

Other important Information

At 2pm on each day of the show, seasoned art professionals will conduct a walking art discussion through the lovely gardens blocks, while greeting many of the show’s artists.

As well, members of the City’s Fine Art Commission will be on the tour also.  They’ll talk about the permanent sculpture collection that’s been installed along these four blocks, and their role in helping to acquire these City-owned sculptures–which include the works of artists such as Yayoi Kusama, Tony Smith, and Roxy Paine.

At the show, the Affaire will be collecting ballots for a New Award, the People’s Choice, that will be decided by you–the people–to pick your top aesthetic choice among the many featured artists.

You’ll be able to pick up a ballot at the Main Information Booth to participate in selecting the top artist at the show, from the 250 participating artists, making for a even more excitement at the Affaire.

The first fifty voters will receive a valuable art show gift bag.  Ballots will have to be turned in between noon on Saturday the 15th,, and noon on Sunday the 16th.  The People’s Choice Award will be announced at 3pm on Sunday.

This year’s special Series

As part of the continuing demonstration series on basic, precious elements, this year the Affaire will focus on “Air," that invisible substance that all life needs.  Part of this year’s event will feature the internationally praised movie, "Home," a stunning two hour portrayal of the Earth’s history, directed by the renowned aerial photographer and filmmaker, Yann Arthus Bertrand, and shot entirely from the air.

Here’s a sneak preview:

Based on all the art, artists, the location at the Beverly Gardens Park, its rose bushes, public art, and serene walkways, outdoor dining, Latin music, a wine garden, live jazz, art demonstrations and all the special programs, mark your calendars and head to Beverly Hills on May 15th and 16th.

The Affaire in the Gardens Art Show is two days dedicated to culture, the celebration of both the richness and joy that art and the participating artists play in our life, and how it makes our lives so much more special.

Needless to say, it benefits you as well as the artistic and cultural fabric and infrastructure of Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, and our community.

So come this upcoming 15th and 16th of May, we’ll see you at the Affaire in the Gardens Art Show!
