Los Angeles has a Large Ethnic Diversity

Dec 21, 2010 by Lisa Newton

If Los Angeles is known for anything besides its glamor, glitz, and being the entertainment capital, it’s our ethnic diversity that tells another side of who we are.

Our population’s ethnicity ranges from Latinos to Asians to Whites and Blacks, and others creating a giant melting pot of culture, all whom call Los Angeles home.

To discover the vast ethnic diversity here, listed by neighborhood, I used the data from the LA Times Mapping LA project.

Still a work in progress, the LATimes Mapping Project is a wonderful resource. And as you can gather from the chart below of the 272 recognized neighborhoods within our 16 various regions, 265 of the them have been ranked according to their ethnicity.

At the top of the list, the most diverse neighborhood is Mid-Wilshire:

Mid-Wilshire Ethnic Diversity

And at the bottom of the list is: East Los Angeles:

East LA Ethnic Diversity

Between is what makes up the rest of the 4,000 square miles that represent Los Angeles County, the largest county within the USA. Be sure to scroll down to the bottom. So of the numbers might surprise you.

The LA Times Mapping Project doesn’t solely feature ethnicity, but also maps our city’s population density, income levels, education, crimes, and other metrics.

I’ve left the links in the chart, so if you’d want to find out more about where you live or other area, just click through. I’ve found it to be quite fascinating to learn more about my neighborhood, and learn more about how the rest of our city varies from one area to another.

[UPDATE] The New York Times has a great map of ethnic diversity in the USA: Mapping America: Every City, Every Block.

I think it must be wonderful to live in a town/city where there is a lot of ethnic diversity. Imagine every day there would be someone new and interesting to meet and so much to learn from each other on different cultures and beliefs.
