Los Angeles Free Friday

Aug 27, 2010 by Lisa Newton

Although the summer is winding down, the action never stops in LA. This Saturday and Sunday is no exception as fun and free entertainment abounds during this last weekend before Labor Day.

And every week as I’m compiling all the events for each Free Friday, I’m always amazed at the depth, breadth, and variety of all the free concerts, events, sales, and promotions that happen in every corner of our city each week; notwithstanding all of the other paid things to do here.

From art in Frogtown, to music on both the East and Westsides, to beach volleyball in Long Beach, you always find something to do or go while Travelin’ Local in Los Angeles:

Happening Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Fiesta La Ballona, “is a celebration of the past, present and future of Culver City, showcasing both its warmth and its sophistication,” It’s featuring two music stages, a petting zoo, pony rides, and will have free parking for both cars and bikes. Along with tradition food vendors, a Beer and Wine Garden will also be available. All of the fun takes place in Veteran’s Park, located at the intersection of Culver Boulevard and Overland Avenue, just west of Downtown Culver City. For the entire schedule of events, here’s the link.

Elysian Valley, otherwise known as Frogtown, is hosting a celebration of the creativity and talent flourishing in the industrial buildings along the LA River, otherwise known as the Fifth Annual Frogtown Artwalk. With a self-guided tour of more than 30 artists and artisans, this year’s Frogtown Artwalk will also include free movie screenings in Elysian Valley Gateway Park on an outdoor screen which will host the Elysian Valley Arts Collective’s short film: Mapping Frogtown: Stories from Elysian Valley:

The studios will be open on Saturday, August 28th from 5:00 -10:00pm. Free street parking is available. For a map of the participating studios, click here.

BuskerFest 2010 I don’t think you’ll find the word in the dictionary, but it translates to 15 Local bands-turned-buskers, a Beer Garden, magicians, cartoonists and much more. On Saturday, August 28th from 5:00pm – 11:00pm, at First and Linden in Downtown Long Beach, this family friendly festival event will encourage all attendees to stroll along the art deco streets of the East Village Arts District on foot. Alternative transportation to the event is encouraged, with several public transit options available, plus if you’re coming via bike, free bicycle valet parking is available. With six stages, you’ll be surrounded by non-stop jamming hot music.

If you’re into shopping, getting a good deal (who doesn’t?), and supporting St. Joseph Center at the same time, then head over to the big Boutique Event. The St. Joseph Center Thrift Store has been saving all of their finest donations, including Prada, Marc Jacobs, antiques, sterling, Gucci, children’s goods, and much more. All the proceeds will be donated to help low income and homeless families achieve self sufficiency. Located at 1828 Lincoln, between Pico and Michigan, all the St. Joseph Center Boutique Event will be held on Saturday between 10:00am and 5:00pm.

Featuring tournament play in five beach sports; beach volleyball, beach soccer, beach touch football, beach tennis and beach dodge ball, the 3rd Annual SoCal Sports & Entertainment Festival will also includes live music, artist showcases, a street fair, beer, wine & and a food garden and kid’s zone. All of this beach action takes place on both Saturday from 9:00am-9:00pm, and on Sunday, from 9:00am-4:00pm. So head over to Marina Green Park/Alamitos Beach to see how the pros do it.

How about a Health Fiesta this weekend? What’s a Health Fiesta? Día de La Mujer Latina is a fun and community oriented gathering that provides a variety of health screenings, health education materials written in Spanish, medical providers and community volunteers fluent in Spanish, patient navigators to assist with the medical process, and health advocates to assist Latinos with health questions. Sound like something you want or need? If so, head over to the LA Convention Center, South Hall “H” on Sunday, August 29th from 10:00am to 5:00pm.

To enjoy outdoor music and evening views of the city, Saturdays off the 405 is sure to be a hit. Located at the Getty, the event will be held on Saturday, August 28th, between 6:00-9:00pm. Everybody is invited to listen to great music with Spotlight After Dark tours in the galleries. There will be DJ sets to open and close the night. Although no outside alcohol is allowed on site, a cash bar serves “Getty-tinis,” and other drinks to imbibe at the Garden Terrace Cafe which also offers sandwiches, salads, and other food to eat.
