As the summer winds down, vacations have been taken, back to school supplies line the counter, and the memories of Summer 2010 remain vivid.

In two weeks, Labor Day weekend will be here, and the summer will be one for the books.

But, it’s not over until it’s officially over, so to enjoy and celebrate the end of another summer, get your funk and fun into gear and take advantage of many end-of-summer activities; if you’re into bikes, health, circus performers, festivals, or sandcastles, here’s some soirees that you can enjoy this weekend for free:

Tonight, Friday, August 20th, celebrates the Big Festival at the Boyle Heights Farmers Market, located at the Mariachi Plaza Metro Station at the corner of Boyle & 1st St. The evening will host and honor Boyle Heights local resident and comedian Felipe Esparza–who recently won this season’s “Last Comic Standing” competition on NBC–and Council Member Jose Huizar. It’s also featuring radio personality Humberto Luna, live performances by Mariachi Monumental De America con Alicia Juarez; Amidst, Casa de Calacas and Rocio Ponce Flamenco. Plus, a horse exhibition by Rancho Armendariz. All the fun starts at 3:00pm and runs until 9:00pm.

On Saturday, from 10:00am to 1:00pm, you can watch sand castles being built. All along Will Rogers State Beach, TheLEK.com, a Los Angeles dating site, is hosting the Nothin’ But Sandcastle Competition, with all the proceeds going to support Heal the Bay, an environmental nonprofit dedicated to making southern California coastal waters and watersheds, including the Santa Monica Bay, safe, healthy and clean. The competition offers a fun team-based challenge for the kid in all of us.

The LA Derby Dolls, Southern California’s premiere all-female, backed track roller derby league, in partnership with Los Angeles City Council Member Eric Garcetti’s office, are hosting a Health Fair on Saturday, August 21st. Free services will be provided at the Fair including no cost mammograms, blood tests, diabetes testing, body fat testing, and much more. Free food is being provided by Mama’s Hot Tamales, La Guerra Tamaleria, Gigi’s Café, just to name a few. So if you need to get tested or need some health information and assistance, head over to the Doll Factory, located at 1910 W. Temple St. in LA from 10:00am-2:00pm. There will also be several workshops held including how to make healthy tamales, self-defense, and proper dental care. Who says Los Angeles doesn’t have heart?

If you’re into bikes, movies, and parties, then Bikeside Speaks is right up your alley. On Saturday, August 21st, head over to Cynergy in Santa Monica. Starting at 6:30pm, speakers will be there including candidate for City Council District 4 in LA, Stephen Box, Gary Kavanagh of Gary Rides Bikes, “Cool Ass” Mike Bower, of 1000 Bikes, and Betsy Butler, Democrat for State Assembly will all update you on various upcoming projects that are currently in the planning stages or being working on. In any case, you can attend and let them all know what’s on your mind. Beginning at 8:30pm, the movies include those from the Disposable Film Festival. And after all that, the real fun begins with an after party at the Hotel Erwin, on Venice Beach. So pack a blanket and ride your bike to get there.

Beginning at 11:00am on Sunday, August 22nd–along with children’s activities–and starting at 1:00pm, there will be brief performances by Cirque du Soleil. Additional information can be found at The Grove, On the big stage at 189 Grove Drive, Cirque du Soleil will select special parts of 6 different performances from their Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil productions. Cirque du Soleil shows include: Viva ELVIS (Aria), Mystère (Treasure Island), O (Bellagio), Zumanity (New York – New York), KA (MGM Grand), and Criss Angel Believe (Luxor Las Vegas). It’s a special event and you’ll even get to learn circus performance techniques at the Circus Play Area in the Park. Its fun for the whole family.
