Los Angeles Free Friday

Jun 18, 2010 by Lisa Newton

Now that the Lakers have won their 16th Basketball Championship vs. their long-term nemesis, the Boston Celtics, at the Staples Center, in the last game of this pivotal series, history is in the books. Congratulations, LA Lakers!

As proud Los Angeles fans, we’re certainly just as happy, as the Boston Celtic fans must be dismal–and probably miserable for another year–in that in 2010 we tipped the scale with three out of five titles (over the last 26 years) we faced Boston and have beat them.

As we recently featured in our story, Boston Sucks or Beat LA! For the 12th Time in NBA History a Familiar Chant Comes to Town, our world-class team is the 2010 winners. So that’s even more incentive to explore the different activities going on around town this weekend:

The title of this event says it all, “Make Music Pasadena.” If you want to experience 300 bands, take the stages, yes there are six themed stages, plus inside area businesses and cultural institutions at outdoor courtyards, who knows where else you should go? Music, music, and more music on Saturday, on the streets, in the parks, and at various public spaces in Pasadena on June 19th, and June 20th, starting at 11:00am and lasting until 10:00pm.

Here’s just a little taste:

Why not head over to over to the beaches on the Westside for International Surfer Day? With various events happening in Huntington Beach, Santa Monica, and Long Beach, you’re sure to have a good time. Activities range the gamut from music, beach clean-ups, prizes, and free food. It doesn’t get any better. The event will take place both Saturday and Sunday at various times and locations, so be sure to click their link to find out more information.

Not often do you get the chance to get on your bike and explore art and culture in Echo Park and historic Filipinotown. Well, tomorrow is your chance at the Folk Art Everywhere Bike Tour. On Saturday, June 19th, from 11:30am to 2:30pm, the easy 3.4 mile bike ride will include stops at Remy’s, a gallery space focused on Filipino art & culture; Nahuí Ohlín, a retail shop celebrating indigenous literature, history, music and crafts; Tribal Café, serving juices, coffee and other goodies; Edendale Branch Library, a bustling library on iconic Sunset Blvd; and Pilipino Workers Center, providing resources for Filipino workers and their families. Sounds like fun to me.

Do you feel like a having a little dessert? Then the second Eat my Blog is the place to be. On Saturday, June 19th,, food bloggers from all over the city will get together to share some of their best kept secrets. 70+ bakers will also be there cranking out over 2,000 baked goods, with all the proceeds benefiting the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank. To get a taste and some good eats, head over to the Tender Greens, at 8759 Santa Monica Blvd., in West Hollywood on Saturday, June 19th, from 10:00am-4:00pm.

Every week, Travelin’ Local is proud to bring you the so many free events that are happening in and around Los Angeles. So have fun this weekend and don’t forget the free concerts and movies that are also happening this weekend, listed on the bottom of our homepage.
