Keeping your Automobile Green and Eco-Friendly

Aug 17, 2009 by Lisa Newton

One might think that washing your car at home is more eco-friendly than going to a big, large, and impersonal carwash. Seems like a reasonable conclusion, after all, the Car Wash is so large and industrial, and has all of those big scrubbers, brushes, chemicals, and other devices. Well, if that was your conclusion—you’d be wrong!

Squeaky Clean

Car Washes are Eco-Friendly

The average home car wash uses more than 500 gallons of water, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. For a comparison, a 5 minute shower averages 25 gallons; in essence, your car is getting an hour long shower.

On the other hand, according to the International Carwash Association, commercial car washes use about 32 gallons of water per car. In addition, professional car washes, pursuant to the 1972 Clean Water Act drain their wastewater into the sewer systems, and recycle the spent water before it’s flushed back into the environment.

On the other hand, if you wash your car at home, its waste water and soap travels directly into the storm sewers, which often times travels directly into the ocean, which causes long term, and frequently irreversible environmental and eco-damage.

At the Car Wash

Los Angeles has a major drought and water shortage; in fact we are already in the Phase I Water Restriction code and Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa, is advising that we implement Phase III, assuming Phase II is already in default.

Phase IV prohibits home car washing, so this is a very serious issue.

For eco-friendly and Green friendly states, including California, more often than not, information is power, so the fact that a Car Wash is very much eco-friendly is good to know and to use. But you don’t have to live in a “green friendly State.” No matter the state, using Car Washes saves the envionment.
