Going Vegan in Los Angeles via Facebook

Apr 11, 2010 by Lisa Newton

In the USA, approximately 0.5% of Americans identify themselves as vegan, which if my math is correct, equates to 1.5 million people. Not a large percentage considering the total population, but not a small one at that, and increasingly growing also. In fact, one of every four college students in the U.S., is seeking vegan options on campus.

Have you ever thought about going Vegan? I’m sure that most of you have probably heard the term, but do you really understand what it means, and know what going vegan entails?

From the American Vegan Society:

Veganism is compassion in action. It is a philosophy, diet, and lifestyle.

Veganism is a sophisticated way of living in accordance with having a reverence for life, recognizing the rights of all living creatures, and extending them the compassion, kindness, and justice exemplified in the Golden Rule.

Vegans exclude flesh, fish, fowl, dairy products (animal milk, butter, cheese, yogurt, etc.), eggs, honey, animal gelatin, and all other foods that originate from any form of animal origin.

Veganism also excludes animal products such as leather, wool, fur, and silk in clothing, upholstery, etc. Vegans usually make efforts to avoid the less-than-obvious animal oils, secretions, etc., in many products such as soaps, cosmetics, toiletries, household goods and other common commodities.

Not surprisingly, the first Vegan organization originated here in California.

Why bring up veganism now?

Well, because I entered a challenge. It’s the 24-Hour Vegan Birthday Challenge on Facebook. I thought Monday, April 12th would be a perfect day to be Vegan for a Day.

Besides the obvious health benefits, I’m looking forward to purchasing a new purse. My current ones are leather.

If you’re game, just click the Facebook link and attend the event. If you’re like me and not familiar whatsoever with vegan cooking, I’ve included a map of the many Vegan restaurants here in the Los Angeles area below:

Odds are that some people may permanently embrace the Vegan ethos, but even if they don’t, it’s fun and cool to learn about alternative lifestyles, so Monday’s 24 hour challenge will be an interesting educational experience.

On that note, I can hardly wait to tempt my palate with a few vegan alternatives.
