Diversions, Demolitions, and Daily Attractions at the 2010 Orange County Fair

Aug 02, 2010 by Sarah Roullard

Who doesn’t love the fair? The Orange County Fair is in full swing at the OC Fair and Event Center in Costa Mesa. The annual event is celebrating its 120th year. I visited the fair last Saturday with friends and family for a full day of fun.

We began the day with roasted corn, $10 dark-lager beer, and a stroll through the games and rides in the Carnival area. The bright colored stuffed animals hanging in neat cascading rows made every kid’s eyes glow. Adults and children gazed amongst the prizes with excitement. We played the cup toss game, hoping to win a monster prize, but walked away content with a small stuffed whale.

There are countless, exciting rides in the Carnival area, including roller-coasters, the gigantic “La Grande” Ferris Wheel, free-fall towers, and crazy spinning rides like the “Tango” above.

The main mission of the day was to watch the Demolition Derby, its excitement, and the wreckage. The exhilaration of expecting automotive chaos is truly unique. We cheered with every rev of the engine. The level of destruction was inconceivable! We saw some fire, three different cars flip, and a whole lot of ego.

Drivers maneuvered their cars in reverse so as to crash into each others’ engines, instantly eliminating their trunk space. By the end of the event each and every car on the field was a mangled, completely inoperable mess. Fortunately no one was badly hurt and the firemen never had to deploy their fire extinguishers. The attendees left feeling fulfilled.

I highly recommend grabbing a “Daily Events Calendar” booklet which features events by day, a map of the entire fair grounds, information on different areas and events, a food guide, and useful coupons. You can find one at any information kiosk.
