Destination: Orange Circle, Olde Towne Plaza, Orange, CA

Aug 28, 2010 by Sandy Schroeder

Welcome to Main Street, U.S.A., at the intersection of Glassell and Chapman in Orange.

At the center of the traffic circle, Plaza Square has been a welcome gathering place for over a century. Within easy walking distance, you’ll find history, art galleries, a prime collection of antique shops, collector corners, and restaurants of every type.

Olde Towne has been repeatedly voted Orange County’s favorite downtown. Nearby, well preserved old fashioned homes cluster along quiet streets, many with roomy front porches and rose gardens spilling out into the street.

It’s located at the north end of central Orange County, Orange is a major city in small town dress. Established in 1886, the plaza was the original social and commercial hub of Orange. The Plaza Historic District attained significance throughout the state as a historical landmark in 1981, and was placed on the National Registry of Historical Places in March, 1982.

Calendar Note:

Labor Day Weekend – The International Street Fair reigns

The Fair takes place on Friday evening in a four-square block area radiating out from the Plaza, at Chapman and Glassell. It runs through Sunday, with proceeds going to local organizations. Savory foods from all over the world, crafts, folk dancing and music mingle as separate streets salute individual countries.

Now, about lunch…

You’ll enjoy picking favorites…My picks are Chile Relleno de Flor de Calabasa and Jalapeno Margaritas at Gabbi’s Mexican Kitchen; black beans and spinach frittatas at Felix’s Continental Cafe; and huge bowls of luscious salads at Rutabegorz. PJ Abbey’s is another contender with its original stained glass windows and polished wood furnishings. Originally a Gothic style Victorian church, built in 1891, Abbey’s always makes lunch a special occasion.
