Art Walks in Los Angeles County

Art

As the New Year begins, planning for upcoming events and organizing calendars, is often on people’s resolution lists.

One’s as simple as the garden variety generic resolution, as we all know and think such as:

"This year I’m going to be more organized and plan ahead."

Well, I’d like to help with that task. Los Angeles has always been a haven for artists:

From the original Los Angeles printmaking scene, the artistic and art colony of Laguna, public art and murals, fine art galleries and world-class museums, the epicenter for cinema and the motion pictures arts and sciences.

And now we’re also leaders in digital and interactive media, and the international fashion scene. Art flows from here like water from a fast moving stream.

All you have to do is look around and you’ll see art–on building walls, windows, billboards, underpasses, and so forth.

But for many, going into an art gallery is at times daunting, intimidating, and they feel that they have to buy something just to take a look.

Most, if not all of these falsehoods about art galleries are nothing more than myth. But what stops people from visiting galleries?

As mentioned, price, intimidation, or maybe it’s just a lack of knowledge and unfamiliarity.

But what is true is that galleries do still carry feelings of stigma for some, who, real or perceived, think that visiting an art gallery is something that they feel uncomfortable with. Therefore they’re unlikely to visit one.

Be that as it may, an important reason for the sea-change in how people are becoming more comfortable visiting and frequenting art galleries, is due to the emergence and importance of Art Walks.

What is an art walk?

Culver City Art Walk 2009

Simply put, an Art Walk is when people get together and literally visit and walk thorough a chosen area, by walking through the various participating art galleries, restaurants, and other places of interest, that are reaching out to welcome new visitors to their gallery.

Since its inception in 2004, Downtown Los Angeles’ Art Walk has experienced exceptional growth–with over 10,000 walkers participating in the later part of 2009.

Pasadena, Culver City, among other areas locally, also have periodic art walks planned.

There is no there

The main issue for me has been trying to keep track of all of the various art walks on my radar and schedule.  I couldn’t remember which art walk was on which day.  The Downtown Art Walk is easy; its always held on the second Thursday of each month.

But as to be expected, some of the other art walks are held quarterly or annually–so keeping up to date with these takes more effort and planning.

Thus, Travelin’ Local’s Art Walk Calendar was initiated and created. Again, I’ve made every effort to find the latest art walk information to map. If anybody knows of others, feel free to use the comment form to let me know and I’ll update the Calendar:

Here are four Art Walks that I already know haven’t announced their 2010 schedule yet, but as soon as the information is available, I’ll add it to the Calendar:

  • Culver City Art Walk: usually held in late spring, from 12:00pm to 6pm

  • Brewery Art Walk: regularly takes place in the spring and fall from 11:00am to 6:00pm

  • Pasadena Art Walk: last year’s event was held in the fall from 11:00am to 5:00pm

  • Silver Lake Open Studio:  Last year’s event spanned three weeks starting in November with various special events scheduled for the weekends.

  • Travelin’ Local and Art Walks are a cool combination. To enjoy them, all you have to do is go.
