Although the only excuse you need to go to Palm Springs is to just sit back and relax for a weekend–as if you ever needed another–try this one:

22nd Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival

With almost 200 films from over 60 countries, the Festival showcases films featuring Monica Bellucci, Pierce Brosnan, Catherine Deneuve, Edie Falco, Colin Farrell, James Gandolfini, Terrence Howard, Isabelle Huppert, Angelina Jolie, Melissa Leo, Jack Nicholson, Noomi Rapace, Vanessa Redgrave, Uma Thurman and Rachel Weisz.

This year’s Palm Springs Festival includes 9 World Premiers, 17 North American Premiers, and 33 US Premieres.

Commenting about the process for selecting its films, Darryl Macdonald, the Palm Springs International Festival Director said:

Our film line-up is particularly strong this year, highlighting a bracing blend of established and newly emerging talents, as well as a wealth of provocative new work springing from nascent international film production hubs. There’s a notable emphasis on personal vision, rather than films that utilize genre conventions or stereotyped characters.  I’m particularly delighted that we have the opportunity to launch the Festival with a broadly accessible comedy directed by Francois Ozon and starring established French talents Catherine Deneuve and Gérard Depardieu.

The Opening Night Gala for this sensational 12 day event, is on Thursday, January 6th, from 6:30 – 9:30pm, with the screening of Potiche –the stylish French farce, which is an irresistible romp through 1970s kitsch, politics and female emancipation, followed by a spirited reception at the Palm Springs Art Museum.

While the annual Palm Springs Film Festival is among the largest film festivals in North America–welcoming 130,000 attendees–it’s also highly esteemed for its lineup of new and celebrated international features and documentaries.

The Festival is also known for its annual Black Tie Awards Gala, honoring the best achievements of the film year, who in recent years have included Clint Eastwood, Kate Winslet, Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Sean Penn, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ron Howard, Anne Hathaway, Jeff Bridges, Danny Elfman and many others.

This year’s Festival wrap will be on Sunday, January 16th, featuring the award winning cinematic achievement, The First Grader, which is a highly emotional and uplifting drama about a 84-year-old Kimani, a former Mau Mau freedom fighter, who eventually takes advantage of a new Kenyan law to attend school.
